Los testimonios son uno de los elementos de prueba e investigación más importantes del sistema de justicia. En ocasiones, incluso el único elemento disponible, dado que muchos tipos delictivos se caracterizan por la falta de evidencias físicas. Así, una declaración o una identificación pueden convertirse en los únicos argumentos para probar unos hechos a partir de los cuales dictar sentencia. Pero cuando hablamos de los testimonios, multitud de preguntas nos vienen a la cabeza: ¿suelen ser exactos los testigos en sus declaraciones?, ¿qué tipo de errores cometen?, ¿qué afecta a sus testimonios?, ¿es más exacto un testigo que afirma estar seguro de lo que dice que uno que duda?, ¿cómo podemos obtener una declaración sin errores?, ¿existen los detectores de mentiras?, ¿si varios testigos están de acuerdo en un detalle en contra de otro testigo, por ser mayoría significa que el último está equivocado o miente?, ¿por qué un testigo puede «recordar» un hecho que nunca sucedió y estar convencido de que fue así?, ¿son fiables los testigos infantiles?, ¿puede una víctima haber olvidado completamente una agresión de cuando era niño y recordarlo de pronto muchos años después?, ¿cómo es posible que varios testigos identifiquen a una persona como autor de un delito y todos se equivoquen?, ¿cómo podemos saber si una rueda de reconocimiento está bien construida? A estas y otras preguntas trata de dar respuesta esta obra, fruto de muchos años de trabajo en el área aplicada de la psicología forense experimental y de la investigación en la psicología de los procesos cognitivos básicos (memoria, percepción y atención).
